At our deepest level, we all know to what degree we're being honestly authentic.
From this depth of authenticity, we act with innate loving wisdom, increasing joy and decreasing suffering for all.
Yet, fear and ignorance can lock us into our small selves, small cults, small dogmas, and other self-serving ideologies, leading to hate crimes against our fellow humans, other living creatures, and our environment.
So all of us carry both seeds of wisdom, as well as seeds of ignorance.
But what determines how we actually live our lives?
An old Cherokee is teaching his grandson about life. "A fight is going on inside me," he said to the boy. "It is a terrible fight and it is between two wolves. One is evil - he is anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego." He continued, "The other is good - he is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith. The same fight is going on inside you - and inside every other person, too."
The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather, "Which wolf will win?"
The old Cherokee simply replied, "The one you feed."

#485 Intentionally Opening Awareness
Optimal functioning of a human, animal or plant requires that each cell of the multi-cellular organism have open lines of communication with all the billions of other cells of the body, and with the outside world. Awareness of inside and outside - absolutely basic & essential to health.
Yet much of the time we're obsessing over someone or something that's bugging us (aversion), or something that we really really really want (craving). When thus preoccupied, we're ignoring virtually everything else inside & outside of us. This is SUBoptimal functioning and it makes us feel lousy (biofeedback to restore balance).
When our bodies tell us that things are not right, we can open our senses up to become aware of all that's going on inside & outside of our skin boundary. Curious, relaxed, non-judgmental awareness is natural, healthy yet so underutilized. We can intentionally continuously increase this healthy, optimal state of awareness - it's called mindfulness practice.

#452 Meaning in Life & Levels of Well-being
"Meaning in life is regarded as a critical facet of well-being, referring to people’s judgments that their lives are coherent, make sense, & are endowed with a sense of overarching purpose. Most research on meaning in life (& the closely-related construct, purpose in life) has drawn from adult samples. Across hundreds of studies, higher levels of meaning in life consistently are related to greater well-being & better health, as well as lesser psychological distress & reduced impact from physical illness, including death. Although research on meaning in life within adolescents is more scarce, a similar pattern of results emerges, leading some to suggest that meaning in life is foundational to positive youth development."

The depth of each person's interest, investigation & direct experience of life's meaning, self-concept, & worldview can vary greatly from blissful ignorance to transcendent joy, with a broad band of "ordinary unhappiness" in between.
"People might search for meaning if they feel like their lives are meaningless or if they were motivated to continually deepen their ideas about what their lives mean. The definition of search for meaning accounts for both kinds of motivations. Essentially, the presence of meaning is about the destination and search for meaning is about the journey."

Mindfulness practice is a wise, life-long, progressive path from ignorance & unhappiness, towards joy.

#345 Mindfulness Meditation & Ethical Behavior - One Indivisible Package
"Moral integrity, concentration, and insight all grow together, conditioning one another every step of the way. Ethical mind states are a necessary precursor for meditation, because the mind is incapable of tranquility if agitated by the hindrances of sense desire, ill will, restlessness, laziness, and doubt. Ethical behavior is also the demonstrable result of wisdom, insofar as unwholesome states arise less often and with less intensity as wisdom deepens. Wisdom transforms the unconscious mind, rooting out impulses that lead to suffering both for oneself and for others. It does this not by acting them out or suppressing them, but by the middle way of seeing clearly how impermanent they are, and how they are born in and nourished by the delusions of self. In short, one understands them, and they lose their allure.
... Behavior is the outward expression of one's inner understanding, and only someone still firmly in the grip of craving and ignorance is capable of the abuse of power, money, sexuality, and intoxicants." Andrew Olendzki
